Ever thought of having something that could definitely have the same feeling or lets just say almost the feel of watching movie in the cinema? I am sure you have felt to have such a tablet which could at least provide you the multimedia experience close to cinema. Well, look no further and here’s the ASUS ZenPad Theater 8.0. A little recap on how it started. Before there was two versions of ZenPad 7 series. One comes as ZenPad C 7.0 and another with a little better specification with ZenPad 7.0. Later part, there was the introduction of Audio Cover which came specially for the ZenPad 7.0. It worked flawlessly with the tablet and the one and only problem that we faced on that particular tablet is its performance stutter which came upon using it for quite some time. This I do think that happened due to the usage of Intel processor which is the one belongs to the “lower-end” version.

What comes inside the box?

  • ASUS ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL
  • USB Cable
  • 3-Pin Charging Adapter
  • User Guide
  • Warranty Card
  • Audio Cover
  • Charging Adapter for the Audio Cover
  • User guide for the Audio Cover

Right after that, there was the introduction of the upgraded and slightly bigger version of the ZenPad, the ZenPad 8.0 which runs on a Snapdragon processor. However, the Audio case was not made available and many of ASUS’s loyal customers began to question the imperfection of having such a stylish tablet but without the compulsory accessories which in this will be the Audio case. With all these events taking place, ASUS have finally decided to bundle up the ZenPad 8.0 plus the Audio Cover for the ZenPad 8.0 which is now known as ASUS ZenPad Theater. Below is my experience with the tablet for the past 2 weeks.

I personally love to use any gadgets without any protection. Protection here means screen protector and casing. By default the tablet comes in a separate box while the Audio Cover is in another box (which both of them are bundled together in a bigger box). The design is identical to the ZenPad 7.0. It is definitely sleek and stylish. It does not feel that its a device which will cost you less than RM1000. It feels nice to hold and attracts a lot of attention when you’re using it. When you attach your ZenPad 8 with the Audio Cover, there’s no need to get any casing anymore. It enhances the premium look and it protects the tablet well enough. I would prefer the Black version of this tablet rather than the provided Metallic version as it suits guys more although it does not look as bad as the White version as that would suits girls.

Display and Camera

This tablet comes with IPS display and HD resolution. It does come with Corning Gorilla Glass 1 protection on the screen to avoid basic scratches and cracks. Moving to the camera section, the main camera comes at 8MP. It is good enough to take good decent shots which you could see the sample shots below. There’s no LED flash on this ZenPad 8, however you can consider getting the LolliFlash which enhances the clarity and brightness of the image drastically. The front selfie camera is set at 2MP and you can still get decent looking selfies out of it as you can still use ASUS’s beautification feature.

Call and Speaker Quality

The ZenPad Theater supports voice call. This means you can use it as a phone because it does have an earpiece for you to listen to the party on call. The earpiece is pretty huge as it also works as the one and only front facing speaker. Call quality is great and you can definitely get clear and crisp quality from its loudspeaker as well. In terms of speaker itself, you might be disappointed as it is not as loud as you would have want as the maximum volume itself does not generate much audio output. However, that’s where the Audio Cover plays a huge role. The Audio Cover comes with 6 speakers and a build in woofer within the case itself! The audio gets extremely loud and the build in woofer pumps the bass as though you’re using and external audio system.

- Please recheck your ID(s).
- If you are showing a private album, check that the "Retrieve Photos From" option is set to "User's Private Album" and that the Authorization Key is correct.

Processing Power

The ZenPad Theater is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410 Quad core processor. Practically this is a better processor that then one running on ZenPad 7.0. I can barely notice any lags or unnecessary stutters. So far I’ve been using this tablet mainly for videos and songs with minimal gaming in between. With 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, it definitely completes the need of having a good tablet. In case the 16GB is not enough for you, there’s also an option for you to expand it via micro SD slot which supports expansion up to 64GB.

4G LTE Ready & ASUS Zen UI

This premium looking tablet comes with LTE support which makes it one of the value for money tablet available out there. It has a single Micro SIM slot and the 4G network seems to be stable during my usage on Digi’s network.  About the software, I have talked about it in-depth on my Zenfone 2 Laser’s review which you can view here. It is one of the most customize-able UI that is available out there and you will definitely love it’s features. Out of the box, the ASUS ZenPad Theater comes with Android 5,02 Lollipop.

Battery Life

The ASUS ZenPad Theater comes with 4000mAh non-removable battery. Since I have mentioned that I use it mainly for videos and songs, the battery lasts half the day only. That’s because of massive usage and you can consider it as heavy usage. Before I started using it heavily, I just used it as a normal tablet with calls, social messaging, Facebook and web browsing. During that period, the battery could last me the entire day with about 3 hours of Screen On Time.

If you’re looking for an affordable tablet with call capability and for watching movies, this is the perfect companion for you. Look no further as you can never find any other tablet out there which could offer you rich multimedia experience like the ASUS ZenPad Theater. This tablet retails at RM999 inclusive of GST and is available at authorized dealers near you.
